News From Within

May 1st, 2012 by Lindsay Mata

For those of you that don’t know, our Adrianne Selvidge just completed the Leadership Edmond program through the Edmond Chamber. Adrianne was voted Leadership Edmond Class XXVII MVP by her peers. At the start of the nine month program the class was tasked with coming up with a Legacy project that would both make an impact and have a lasting impression on the community. Adrianne took the reigns on the project and worked with the Edmond school system to create a special day for students at Sunset Elementary.

The school has a large population and very little parental participation so the school doesn’t host Super Kids Days or Field Days like most of the other Edmond public schools. Based on this news the class decided they could supply the volunteers and supplies to host a Sunset Seahawk Celebration on April 26. All of the students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade class were able to Zumba, sack race and jump rope along with several other fun activities.

As part of the Legacy project coordinated by Adrianne, two Physical Education teachers at Sunset Elementary were able to receive more than $700 worth of wish list items for the students including new balls, games and etc, thanks to Acts 2 United Methodist Church.  And finally, Leadership Edmond Class XXVII has already pledged a donation of $3,000 to the Edmond Public Schools Foundation and that number continues to grow every day and we are extending a challenge to all Leadership Edmond alumni to also donate to continue our push to equip ALL Edmond schools with the items and funds they need to prepare tomorrow’s leaders.

In Apple News…

March 20th, 2012 by Lindsay Mata

The big news in the tech world is the announcement that Apple will start offering dividends of $2.65 per share quarterly starting July 1.  So who has stock in Apple that would like to take us all to lunch?

By the way, Apple’s Chief Executive Officer, Tim Cook, estimates the dividend payments will be more than 10 billion in the first year!

And that isn’t the only big news from Apple.  For months all the buzz has been about the new iPad.  We don’t have official numbers from Apple, but on a call this morning Apple’s CFO said the company had a “record weekend” with the sales of the new iPad.  An article from The Verge on Monday says Apple’s flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York City sold 13,000 iPads in the first 12 hours they were on sale, an average of about 18 per minute.

Here are some of the coolest new features from the iPad:

  • It’s just iPad, not iPad 3 or iPad HD.
  • Retina display- The screen of the iPad will have a sharper resolution than that of its predecessors. The display will have 3.1 million pixels.
  • A faster processor- Apple’s previous tablets contained a dualcore processor, the new iPad will be powered by a quadcore called the A5X.
  • 4G LTE. Previous iPads have been confined to 3G networks. This gadget will have 4G LTE capabilities, meaning it will allow for faster downloading speeds.
  • Improved camera & video capabilities. The new iSight camera will be 5 megapixels.
  • Voice dictation. This feature will be available in English, French, German and Japanese.
  • New color choices. Previously all iPads had a sleek silver shell. The latest version will also be available in black or white.
  • One thing that won’t change? The price. The new iPad will start at $499, as the iPad 2 did before it.

Perhaps an overlooked fact that you may have missed during the big announcement is that Apple has dropped the price of the iPad 2. They will continue to make the iPad 2 for $399. Apple appears to be banking on the drop in price of the iPad 2 to $400 could sway some prospects away from the $200 Kindle Fire.

Still on the fence as to what tablet device is right for you?

Here is a great side-by-side comparison of some of the top performing tablet devices by the Washington Post.

We also really enjoyed this next article about 5 reasons to by the new iPad and 5 reasons NOT to buy the new iPad. If you are in the research stage of your next tablet purchase we think this link is worth checking out this article.

Windows 8 is in Beta.

A couple weeks ago Microsoft released an early preview version of its next operating system, Windows 8, over the Web.

Here are some of the system’s new features:

  • Integration of touch, keyboard and mouse control
  • The Windows app store
  • Cloud services that link PCs and Windows Phone
  • Internet Explorer 10
  • New hardware capabilities

Touch is a big new feature of Windows 8, but people who prefer to use their mouse or keyboard won’t have to compromise because of the touch system. Some experts in the industry say this could be one of the most important launches in Microsoft’s history.
